At some point in the past a thought came to Eben's mind. A thought that is most certainly a revolutionary trigger in today's online world of social networking.
Bearing in mind that the current forms of social network communication are very dangerous because the governments and big companies are in the position to control all the available information that exist online, Eben came up with a solution for this problem.
The solution is Freedom Box, a small personal server with free software and free applications, which would decentralize all the information the users share online, and provide privacy and safety during the exchange of information. Thanks to the crowdfunding on Kickstarter, this project gained the much needed financial support for further development. The idea of decentralizing information encouraged young enthusiasts to start a new social network called Diaspora, which has a similar approach to the privacy of its users.
Eben got a PhD in history from Yale, and has been a professional programmer since the age of fourteen. He is a professor at Columbia Law School. In 2003, he received and award from Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF Pioneer Award) for efforts on behalf of freedom in the electronic world.
At this year's Share conference, he will take part via video link.
