His name is Sawor Mon and he belongs to the Mons, an ethnic group from Southeast Asia. He lives in Burma, a country that was under military dictatorship until recently and that is currently led by a military-backed government. The most common term for this government among activists is “the hybrid regime”.
Sawor was born and raised in a small village in lower Burma where, as he stated, the school system is actually a tool for massive brainwashing and mind control. He believes that every young person should have access to information in this day and age of social media and digital interactions. This is the reason why he decided to share his modest knowledge of computers and internet with those who have never had the possibility to use them, because he strongly believes that access to information will have a positive and firm influence on the situation in his country. Sawor works for HURFOM, a non-government local human rights organization formed in mid-1994. This organization deals with the restoration of democracy, human rights and peace in Burma. It was founded by the pro-democratic students, political activists and community leaders. The members of this organisation monitor and report on human rights situations in the Mon territory and other areas in the southern parts of Burma.
