Many pre-modern theories consider crystals as an intermediate form between the mineral, vegetative and animal kingdoms, an idea that acquires new resonances in the light of recent developments in the fields of artificial chemistry and artificial life. The inspiration for #37 came from the way crystallographers use X-ray to investigate the internal structure of crystals. This structure can be inferred from the interference patterns the X-ray waves produce after percolating through the symmetrical arrangement of molecules in the crystal. In 1984, X-ray diffraction made the discovery of so called ‘quasicrystals’ possible; the starting point of #37 were the computer simulations produced by scientists in order to understand such quasiperiodic structures.

Joost Rekveld se bavi eksperimentalnim filmom i generativnom umetnošću. Na SHARE konferenciji će govoriti o temama koje prožimaju i objedinjuju njegove radove na polju filma, instalacije, pozorišta i softvera.
Rekveld će govoriti o sličnostima između istorija optike i percepcije, i eksperimentalnog filma i kibernetike. Proučavajući istorije pomenutih naučnih disciplina, on je došao do gledišta da mašine nisu puke alatke koje demonstriraju ljudsku volju za moći ili samo proizvode želje, već predstavljaju neku vrstu partnera u našem dijalogu sa svetom.
Pored umetničke prakse, Rekveld je aktivan i kao kustos i predavač. Njegovi filmovi su prikazivani na brojnim festivalima eksperimentalnog, animiranog i kratkog filma. Pored toga, sarađivao je i na velikom broju pozorišnih projekata. Joost Rekveld se nalazi na čelu ArtScience Interfaculty pri Kraljevskom konzervatorijumu i Kraljevskoj akademiji u Den Hagu.
