Brey - 20 year old Breyner Baptista is a student from London.
With origins in Angola, he came to London at 3 yrs old and grew up a hoodrat, with all that involves, hanging round the streets with one of those little gangs of international scallies that London specialises in. By the age of 13 he was getting involved in grime, and getting involved in production. it didn't take long before he was starting to go outside the box, look wider for his influences, exploring lounge music, electronic experimentalism and exotica. He started taking risks with his sounds, and getting flack within the scene for it.
Combine this musical adventurousness and his basis in grime and London bass with the heavy juju rhythms of kuduro, the Angolan music he says was played daily in his house, and you start to come up with a picture of what makes Brey’s music so compelling. The combination of cerebral stimulation with jacking rhythm has got him plays from Bok Bok, Scratcha DVA, Shortstuff, Brackles, Slackk and more. And with the inclusion of a tune (under his Die Barbie Music Collective moniker) on Ramadanman’s Fabriclive CD it’s clear a fire has been lit.
Brey will drop his debut four track 12” on Svetlana in the early summer.
